Material Intelligence: Shelf Life
Shelf Life, kil.n.it experimental ceramics studio
Kil.n.it presents, Shelf Life. This exhibition explores the intimate relationship between objects and books from the Tom Keneally Centre at SMSA and delves into how they coexist in our personal spaces and shape our identities.
These shelves are more than decoration; they are acts of self-expression. Books and objects become emblems of who we are, where we’ve been and our values. Visitors are invited to reflect on the ways we relate to what others display - seeking resonance, connection, and ourselves in the pages and pieces presented.
Exhibition Saturday 11 - Saturday 18 October, Monday to Friday 10.30am - 5 pm, Saturday 10.30am - 3pm, free; Opening Saturday 11 October 1pm - 3pm.

Why do you think Sydney Craft Week is important/what drives you to be part of the Festival?
The artists who work at Kil.n.it Experimental Ceramics Studio are advocates for furthering clay as a contemporary medium through their exhibition Shelf Life at the Sydney Mechanics School of Art. Participation in Sydney Craft Week is an opportunity to exhibit our work to a wider audience which is enabled through Sydney Craft Week. We appreciate being a part of the momentum of a vast number of diverse exhibitions and other events that Sydney Craft Week makes possible.
How does your event respond to the Festival theme ‘material intelligence’?
In an age of Artificial Intelligence we hold onto the physical intelligence of knowing materials through touch, using our tools and hands in making. In ceramics we are using clay which is of the earth, feeling our relationship to the natural world. Exhibiting in the Tom Keneally Library at SMSA connects the worlds between his texts and Kil.n.it’s ceramics - both using physical intelligence to be made and in this exhibition the audience is welcomed to experience the dialog between books and ceramics.
What can people expect from your event?
Experience a wide range of experimental ceramic pieces within a historic building. Displayed on the same shelves as the books in the Tom Keneally Centre on level 3. The audience will be able to purchase artworks throughout the duration of the exhibition and mingle with some of the artists at the opening event on Saturday 11th of October 1-3pm.
